Dig out the tie-dyed tee-shir ts from the back of your closet, put some flowers in your hair and join us for Joel Selvin’s insights on The Gathering of the Tribes and Summer of Love Be-In.
Joel Selvin has been providing his San Francisco Chronicle readers with fascinating accounts of the Bay Area music scene for the past 30 years. Who better to tell us of the heady flower power days of the Haight-Ashbury when San Francisco was the center of the Beat Generation?
On January 14, 1967, 20,000 youngsters of all ages made a pilgrimage to Golden Gate Park for the Gathering of the Tribes for the Human Be-in. It was a seminal event that presaged The Summer of Love. What was this event? Why did it happen? Why was it impor tant? And what was its role in creating the era we call the Sixties?
To answer these questions, Joel Selvin will be our host for a special night of conversation and reminiscence over the figures that shaped the culture, music and events of 1960s San Francisco. Joel is the author of Summer of Love and has covered pop music for The Chronicle since 1970.
